Bing: Microsoft is Cheating.

It is a surprise, not! Microsoft claims that Bing is on the rise and people are using it more as CNET reported. Some technology pundits also reported that Bing has been gaining marketshare shortly after its official launch. Let’s take a look at the Microsoft’s claims closer.

  • Bing automatically replaces Live search in Internet Explorer.
  • Bing is the default search engine in Hotmail interface.
  • Bing is the search engine in Microsoft’s own website.

When I’m looking for Knowledge Base article using Microsoft.com search, I’m actually using Bing.

  1. And how would this be cheating exactly?

Don’t you realize that this is the status quo, just like before Bing’s launch?

Of course, if you ever paid any attention to Microsoft before Bing’s launch, you would realize that every scenario you listed above defaulted to Live Search anyway.

So it wasn’t cheating when it was Live Search, it’s considered cheating now with Bing?

Or if you consider this cheating, I suppose you also consider Yahoo and Google cheating as well, since they plaster their search box conveniently across all of their online properties, and they both have a lot more online properties than Microsoft has?

So what is it? You can’t have it both ways.

  2. Using IE7 if I select Google from my hitsory then start typing because as a dumb user I expect focus to be in the only input field on the page, I’m actually typing in the address bar.

Guess what happens if i hit return having just done that? Yep, I get a list of sites back – from Bing. Annoying, and it only happens when I search for Google – hmm!
