Windows Home Server: McAfee Total Protection Service

I updated the Windows Home Server today found out the notice for McAfee Total Protection Service Add-ins was ready for install. I decided to test the add-ins and installed it. After the install, I found out that Windows Home Server Console performs a lot slower. No doubt that somehow this add-ins effect the performance of Windows Home Server.

I uninstalled the add-ins and Windows Home Server Console performs normally. I assume that it is the add-ins that causes the slowdown.

Rants:

What in the ASDF is Microsoft thinking? It’s always saying that the Network is “at risk” regardless of whatever the situation is.

“The Network is at risk because there are some add-ins available.”

What is wrong with you, Microsoft?

  1. I have the same problem, too. Further on I couldn’t connect to the Server (RDP and Windows Server Console). After a reboot it wokrs with RDP and I uninstall McAfee and all of its components. After this it works fine with all stuff.

    Regards

  2. I installed McAfee Total Protection on my Home Server, now it says that the server is not connected to my network and I can’t access it through the Console. I can get at my files on the Home Server by the Console is not working. How the heck can I now uninstall McAfee, without reinstalling Windows Home Server. Does anyone have any great ideas? Thanks in advance.

  3. I have the same issue. I need to fully remove McAfee.. It is severely slowing down and the “Fix #1” fails…

    Any ideas?

  4. Same here. After installing McAfee, the connection to my server was erratic. I spent over 2 hrs with HP support trying to fix this. Finally, I relented and re-installed the Server OS . Lost all my data though.

  5. I’m in the same situation I have an Acer Aspire H340- I do not like all the error messages generated by McAfee in WHS, so I want to completely uninstall and try a different anti-virus product. However, I cannot seem to find how to actually uninstall it – it’s not listed in the add-ins section… Any ideas?

    1. I think, you have to do it using the standard windows software installation plugin(advanced admin console-plugin -> system control -> software).

  6. I had the same problems with my Aspire H340. I removed de total software of McAfee and the problems are over. But wich new anti virus product works well with the H340

  7. I called McAfee, and spoke to one of their specialist, and get this- The Total Protection Service was not designed to run on small home servers, and this is why it is running so slow.

Answer: Uninstall the service (somehow), or don’t install it at all upon initial start-up. Instead purchase the regular Home/Home Office Total Protection package for a normal home computer.

    1. McAfee Total Protection is a valid program to run on the WHS. I have it enabled, no problems. My desktop runs Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and WHS. I have no connectivity issues, smooth and easy going. Not sure who at McAfee told you that, but reading on MTP service WHS is listed.

  8. I have installed McAffe in my HP smart home server EX490 and I don’t have any problem with it

However I was chatting with McAffe on line before taking any decision to buy it and they told me that McAfee Total Protection is not for WHS

McAffe is not listed In Microsoft Most popular Windows Home Server Add-ins, instead is AVAST so I’m going to stick to AVAST which is cheaper

  9. No one said HOW to uninstall McAfee if not listed as an Addin in WHS. Did you use the Windows Add/Remove tool or some other software?

  10. I don’t not wish to install McAfee Total Protection I want to remove it from Add-Ins. Does anybody know how to do that?

  11. Hi. Connect using remote desktop, find your shared folder on the server and go to the software folder/addins, then delete the file “topwhsaddins” or someting like that package. Done!
