I was helping friends (someones who wouldn’t compensate me at all) sharing an HP LaserJet 1020 using Airport Express. For some reason, the printer driver would not install at all. I tried it on their Windows XP computer and both of my Macs (PowerBook G4 and MacBook Pro). So far i have been unable to make the combination to work. I tested the Airport Express with LaserJet 3055, and the combination works.
As of know I’m not sure if it’s possible to share the HP LaserJet 1020 using Airport Express (through Bonjour).
To get it working on the Mac,
1. Download this driver (http://www.railsguru.com/files/1601_LJ_1022_Series_OSX.dmg)
2. Run the installer
3. Go into /Library/Printers/HP and move every file (not including folders) in there into a folder called temp (create the temp folder first).
4. Move all the files from inside the 1022 folder into the parent /Libraries/Printers/HP folder.
5. Restart the mac.
6. Now it should show LaserJet 1020 under HP printers.
Just did this two nights ago. As far as XP goes, that’s what I’m searching for now.

Ok,
Here is what I did to get it to work in Bonjour on XP.
1. Download the driver from HP’s website for the 1020 (driver only).
2. Run the file.
3. Go into the C:Program FilesHewlett-PackardLaserJet 1020-1022 Drivers folder
4. I ran the ezinstall.exe, and it failed (ok)
5. I right clicked on HPLJ1020.INF and clicked Install.
6. Hopefully you have tried with Bonjour and failed, because I think that still creates the port needed.
7. Use Windows Add new Printer wizard from the Printers and Faxes folder.
8. Choose next, Local Printer, don’t automatically detect, next, Use the following port: IP_AirportExpressName.local:9000 or 9001 (may be more depending on how many printers you have previously connected to your AE).
9. Click next, under HP, scroll to the bottom of the printers list and you should see HP LaserJet 1020. Click that, click next, next, next, finish.
IF the test page failed to printer, you used the wrong port. Here’s the easy part. In Printers and Faxes, right click on HP LaserJet 1020 and choose properties. Click on the Ports tab. A printer in the list should be labeled LaserJet 1020. Place a checkmark in the box for that port. Click apply. Go back to the General tab, and click Print Test Page.
That should do it! Not sure if all the steps are required (EZInstall.exe or the right-click-> install on the inf file). But that’s what I did, so just in case you now have all the steps.

The Mac instructions are for use with the Airport Express! That’s what you have to do to get the driver to show up when you try to add the printer in OSX (the printer being plugged directly into your AE).
