Google Service Outages, Friday, January 24, 2014.

Earlier today I was having trouble making calls using Google Voice via Hangouts. Once I arrived at the office, some colleagues complaint that Gmail was down. It turns out Google did have service outages.

I (proudly and foolishly) rely on Google Voice to do my job. Days like these would certainly grant me extra hours of slacking.

Coincidentally (and ironically), Google’s Reliability Team was doing Reddit AMA right before the outages happened.

WordPress 3.8.1 is now available

If you’re running a self-installed WordPress, you should be updating to WordPress 3.8.1.

WordPress 3.8.1 Update

From WordPress.org Blog:

Version 3.8.1 is a maintenance releases that addresses 31 bugs in 3.8, including various fixes and improvements for the new dashboard design and new themes admin screen. An issue with taxonomy queries in WP_Query was resolved. And if you’ve been frustrated by submit buttons that won’t do anything when you click on them (or thought you were going crazy, like some of us), we’ve found and fixed this “dead zone” on submit buttons.

TeamViewer, an alternative to LogMeIn Free.

Disclaimer:The author of this post and 37prime are not affiliated with TeamViewer and LogMeIn other than being users of products from both companies.

I’ve been getting a lot of the same question following the discontinuation of LogMeIn Free:

What’s a good alternative to LogMeIn Free?

The first alternative to LogMeIn Free that I’m looking at is TeamViewer.

TeamViewer

TeamViewer was quick to jump at the opportunity:

How do I switch from LogMeIn Free to TeamViewer

You may have heard that LogMeIn is no longer offering their LogMeIn Free product as of January 21, 2014. Are you looking for an alternative or do you consider switching from LogMeIn to TeamViewer?

Forget about opaque licensing and confusing product policies. Here is a quick guide on how to switch from LogMeIn to the FREE TeamViewer.

Well played, TeamViewer!

TeamViewer FAQ switching from LogMeIn Free

TeamViewer supports Android, iOS, Linux, Mac OS X and Windows

I have installed TeamViewer on one computer as LogMeIn Free replacement.

LogMeIn Free will be discontinued starting January 21, 2014

LogMeIn announces that LogMeIn Free will be discontinued starting January 21, 2014.

After ten years, LogMeIn’s free remote access product, LogMeIn Free, is going away.  We will be unifying our portfolio of free and premium remote access products into a single offering.  This product will be a paid-only offering, and it will offer what we believe to be the best premium desktop, cloud and mobile access experience available on the market today. We will be notifying those impacted by the change in the coming days and weeks.  In the meantime, we wanted to take a minute to explain the change and help users of LogMeIn’s access products better understand what this means for them.

LogMeIn on iPad

For owners of LogMeIn Ignition for iPad/iPhone and LogMeIn Ignition for Android

While customers who purchased these apps are impacted by this change, we have taken steps to be especially attentive to these customers.  LogMeIn Ignition for iPad/iPhone and Android app purchasers will receive significant discounts, as well as generous terms to ease the transition.  Details of these offers are being sent to Ignition mobile users this week, both via email and in-product notifications.

LogMeIn Ignition is no longer available on iTunes App Store and Google Play Store.

You can read the F.A.Q. on this change.

It is a long time coming for LogMeIn to discontinue this free service. For more than ten years, LogMeIn has provided free alternative to its competitors. LogMeIn obviously sees the need to increase its profit margin.

I do use LogMeIn Free for some casual remote access. As of today, I have to decide whether I want to upgrade my LogMeIn account, go with LogMeIn competitors or find a free alternative.

Apple seeds iOS 7.1 beta 4

Should you be following the two-week release schedule between iOS beta builds, you could be telling people that iOS 7.1 beta 4 would be released on Tuesday, January 21, 2014. You could easily made up a “trusted source within Apple” who told you such news. Then again, Apple could easily release iOS 7.1 beta 4 one day earlier than the expected date.

Anyway, Apple indeed seeded iOS 7 beta 4 build 11D5134c on Monday, January 20, 2014; one day earlier than what some people expected and reported as news.

It seems the awesomeness of “Disable Background App Refresh” visual design is not a priority to change.

iOS 7.1 beta 4

Should Apple follow the two-week release schedule between iOS beta builds, expect iOS 7.1 beta 5 sometimes around February 3 or 4, 2014.
