Windows 10

Announcing Windows 10

From Microsoft:

In the Windows team, we’re proud of this – but we also know that the world today is very different from the one in which Windows grew up. Today, devices outnumber people. Connectivity is like oxygen. The tension between the desire for agility versus stability poses a huge challenge for IT Pros. Experiences – no matter what device you’re on – just need to work. The only thing that hasn’t really changed is the situation for developers – still too much to do, and not enough time.

One way to look at it is that Windows is at a threshold :-). It’s time for a new Windows. This new Windows must be built from the ground-up for a mobile-first, cloud-first world. This new Windows must help our customers be productive in both their digital work and their digital life. This new Windows must empower people and organizations to do great things.

Windows 8 is so two years ago. Here comes Windows 9.

That new Windows is Windows 10.

What?

Microsoft, you just skipped Windows 9.

OK, Windows branding and numbering system never made sense anyway. From Windows XP to Windows Vista to Windows 7. Then it went to 8. Why not call it Windows X, as in Roman numeral for 10? Maybe not, because it looks like that other Operating System with X in it, or that desktop shell called X Window System.

Tomorrow, we are excited to announce the Windows Insider Program, where PC experts and IT Pros can get access to a technical preview of Windows 10 for desktops and laptops. Soon after, we’ll also be releasing technical previews of Windows Server and our management tools.

OK, I’ll certainly be there tomorrow.

By the way, Windows 10 will finally get Multiple Desktop just like Linux and OS X.

Scam Alert: Fake Virus Warning to Make Users Call 1-855-420-8247

A tip from reader:

Scam Alert 1-855-420-8247

A pop-up warning showed up on Safari claiming the viruses were found on the computer. It was almost impossible to quit Safari as the pop-up re-emerges when closed. One way to deal with this is to force quit (Command-Option-Escape) Safari, then disable the auto-resume feature in OS X. In OS X Lion, Mountain Lion and Mavericks, go to System Preferences > General > and uncheck the “Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps” option.

In the upcoming OS X Yosemite, the option looks slightly different; well, more than slightly different.

Check the “Close windows when quitting an app” option.

Consumer Reports: “iPhone 6 and 6 Plus not as bendy as believed”

Bender performing Bending Test on iPhone 6

Consumer Reports:

All the phones we tested showed themselves to be pretty tough. The iPhone 6 Plus, the more robust of the new iPhones in our testing, started to deform when we reached 90 pounds of force, and came apart with 110 pounds of force. With those numbers, it slightly outperformed the HTC One (which is largely regarded as a sturdy, solid phone), as well as the smaller iPhone 6, yet underperformed some other smart phones.

iPhone 6 starts to deform at 70 pounds and the case separates at 100 pounds. Even after the deformation and case-separations, the iPhone 6 still functions.

To no surprise Apple showed off its own testing facility, firing back at the assumptions that Apple did not properly test iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus design.

My view of this so called “bendgate” was blown out of proportion from the start, and that can be attributed to:

  • Lack of understanding of Physics
    Also lack of common sense.
  • Competition
Blackberry, HTC, LG and Samsung were quick to make fun of the situation.
  • Sensationalism
Many news media love the page hit.
  • Fanaticism and Antagonism

In the end, people still love their iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
