All in the name.

Apple is doing away with the numbering on iPad, much sooner than the iPhone. “The new iPad” as Apple would call it at today’s event just like it is introduced at Apple’s home page. A few days ago I wrote:

Apple is that kind of company who would not call the next iPad by the name iPad 3.

My source always said “the next iPad” instead of the much-assumed moniker “iPad 3”. I then knew that Apple will drop the numbering on the iPad and iPhone. I had similar conversation regarding the next iPhone. Many kept asking me about “iPhone 5” which is actually iPhone 4S. I told them that there will be no iPhone with “iPhone 5” moniker. I firmly believed that the next iPhone will simply be called “iPhone”.

One thing I got wrong on today’s event, is the usage of “Retina Display” term. Back in December 2011, I truly believe that Apple would not call the new iPad display a Retina Display. Then again, my source never once used the term “Retina Display” in lieu of high resolution display.

Come Fall 2012, I will find out if I was fed the correct information on the next iPhone; maybe Apple will simply market it as “The new iPhone”.

Retina Display is the new 4G.

Apple has done it!

The term “Retina Display” is the new 4G; just a marketing term.

From GDGT live report:

“There are 264 pixels per inch in this display, and that’s enough to call it a Retina Display. Why is that?”

“You may recall that with an iPhone held at a normal distance your retina can’t discern individual pixels. When the iPad is held at a normal distance [15-inches] it’s the same result.”

That’s basically saying the new iPad has to be held 15-inches away, if not Retina Display won’t be in effect. A lot if not an overwhelmingly majority of people hold the iPad closer than 15 inches.

I thus claim that my TV has also has “Retina Display” because no one can see the pixels when they are sitting at least 10 feet away.

Apple haters already hate the soon to be introduced new iPad.

Our resident psychic sent us a few thoughts telepathically stolen from well known Apple haters. Did I say stolen? NO! I said “telepathically stolen”!

Apple hater extra-ordinaire and Microsoft cheerleader/secret employee Paul Thurrott has finished bashing the next iPad. Comparing it to the “so mind-blowingly awesome” Windows 8 tablets. Thurrott insists that the new iPad does not have Metro interface, therefore it is so boring, stale and outdated. In addition to that Thurrott chides Apple for doing a miniscule update to the iPad. “Nothing revolutionary” says Thurrot, but then he added “I’m going to get one so people see that I do not hate Apple.”

Secret Apple hater and Chief TWiT Leo Laporte is still bitter over being Gizmodo-ed by Apple. “I have undisputedly the most popular Apple-news podc….. netcast out there. I also have millions of listeners on my AM Radio show.” Laporte also insists that Apple’s closed-ecosystem of iOS devices is bad; as he waves the flag of Open Source Software. “Android is an Open Source Project. I support Open Source! Open Source is the way to go.” Speaking of supporting Open Source Software, Laporte proceeds to bash WordPress and promotes the not-Open-Sourced SquareSpace.

Rob Enderle is currently having mini strokes while calling the next iPad that he has not even seen an overpriced hipster status symbol.

Microsoft CEO Steve Balmer proclaims that Windows 8 Tablet is already years ahead of any iPads. Balmer then says: “The iPad does not run Windows 8; not the current ones, not the next one. Everybody will flock to Microsoft Store and buy Windows 8 tablet instead of iPad!” Balmer then throws a few chairs at random directions.

Gizmodo is calling the next iPad a huge fail of a gadget. Gizmodo says that they don’t need to be invited to any Apple events. They don’t care about Apple products. They only cover it because their readers want to know about Apple products. Gizmodo prepares to scour live reports from other sites and have a pretend live coverage.

It’s a trap, or is it?

One that is pretty obvious, firstname@apple.com never mentioned the specifics of upcoming Apple product. It has always been:

  • the next iPhone
  • the next iPad

Back in March 2011, I was told about “the next iPhone” but not iPhone 5 or iPhone 4S. Just like December 2011 when I was told about “the next iPad”.

Apple is that kind of company who would not call the next iPad by the name iPad 3.  Jokingly, I said that Apple should call the next iPad by the name iPad 2x because it features 2x pixel density. Almost everyone expect the next iPad to be called iPad 3. I personally think that Apple could have called it something different.

In addition to all that, firstname@apple.com did mention the double pixel density of the next iPad but never once mentioned “Retina Display”. I tend to believe that Apple will not call the next iPad display as “Retina Display”; for it is purely a marketing term.

All that I heard about the next iPad were carefully worded, leaving no traceable specifics.

We all will find out what it really is on March 7th, 2012.

The Siri on iPad Debate.

The conversation I had back in December 2011 with the ever reliable source on Apple covered the possibilities of Siri on the next iPad. When Apple first unveiled iPhone 4S and Siri, just like many I wanted Siri on iPad 2. I didn’t go as far as accusing Apple purposely limiting Siri to iPhone 4S to boost sales. Apple says Siri is still in Beta phase and I accept that as we all should. One can hope one day Siri would be on more devices in addition to iPhone 4S.

There are reasons why the next iPad will not have Siri. We all would assume that Apple would release two distinct models of the next iPad: Wi-Fi only and the mobile network ready. A lot of people including myself opted buying iPad 2 with 3G with actually having it enabled at all time. I only pay for the no contract 30-day-data-plan whenever I was travelling. As we all have learned, Siri relies on network connection to fully function. Any queries to Siri are sent to Apple’s server for processing. Basically the current incarnation of Siri is useless without persistent network connection. Having said that, Apple is likely not to include Siri in the next iPad.

It is likely that Apple is working on improving Siri such as “Offline Mode” in iOS 6. One could only hope it is true.
