Wrong Product Image

TUAW or The Uninformed Apple Weblog has done it again. Michael Grothaus uses the wrong AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule image on the recent post. The post contains the current 802.11ac models of AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule while referencing to the 802.11n AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.4.

It wouldn’t be a big deal for the product image mix-up if not for a site that called itself “The Unofficial Apple Weblog” and not knowing Apple Product.

TUAW clueless about Apple AirPort Model

Now, these are the correct images for 802.11n AirPort Base Station and Time Capsule:

Sixteen-by-Nine

There seems to be consensus that Apple would drop iPhone 4 and 4S comes September 10, 2013.

Back in May 2013 a person who might or might not be a high ranking Apple employee hinted that Apple would go all 16-by-nine screen ratio for all iPhone and iPod touch this Fall 2013. It is a response to some rumors that Apple would release a larger screen iPhone with 4-by-3 screen ratio in Fall 2013.

Apple will be phasing out 30-pin Dock Connector this Fall 2013. John Gruber believes that Apple would stop selling iPad 2 after new iPad is introduced and I concur.

If I’m right, this would leave the iPad 2 as the last device with a 30-pin port. I expect them to abandon that device in October, when new iPads are announced.

Another point is that Apple would have another event this October and maybe one more before the end of the year.

Apple will be having four busy month starting September 2013. There’s the iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, MacBook Pro and Mac Pro. By the way, there’s one more new product that Apple might introduce this year.

AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.6.4

Apple has released AirPort Base Station Firmware Update 7.6.4.

This update is available for all Apple 802.11n Wi-Fi base stations including AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and AirPort Time Capsule. It contains fixes that:

  • Resolve an issue that may cause AirPort Time Capsule to report that the backup disk is in use
  • Resolve an issue that may cause an IPv6 Tunnel error
  • Resolve an issue that may intermittently cause a loss in Wi-Fi connectivity with iOS devices

Note: This firmware update is for all 802.11n AirPort base stations.

One of the Time Capsule I have been using was having issues with some iOS devices. I hope this update would fix the issue.

Security versus Convenience

Elliott Kember wrote the headline: “Chrome’s insane password security strategy

Kember points out the way Google Chrome manages saved passwords.

There’s no master password, no security, not even a prompt that “these passwords are visible”. Visit chrome://settings/passwords in Chrome if you don’t believe me.

Yes indeed. Unlike Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome does not offer users to set Master Password. Apple added Passwords Manager in Safari 6; the passwords are actually stored in users’ Keychain.

Justin Schuh, who works on Google Chrome Security according to his Hacker News profile, says that it was a design decision to not include Master Password in Google Chrome.

For most users, there’s a certain level of inconvenience they are willing to tolerate when dealing with security. Unsurprisingly a lot of users are still using obvious passwords or none at all for their computer login. That’s because they prioritize convenience over security.

Security and convenience have an inverse relationship. It would look something like this:

Security-vs-Convenience-Linear

that is true if it is a linear relationship. In reality it looks more something like the following:

Security-vs-Convenience-Curved

It is more like a curve line. More convenience means less security.

The concern about the way Google Chrome manages passwords is valid. At the same time there is a bigger issue with security. Having a Master Password option would be useless if it is the same obvious password people are using for their computer login. Most users using Mozilla Firefox never set the Master Password at all.

Users need to understand why they need to secure their computers. Ultimately the users are the one to set the security level based on their convenience level.

This would be the first time I received Amber Alert on my Nexus 4 and iPhone. Users can turn this kind of alert on their phones.
