Hacking Attempt at Apple Developer Website

Apple has sent out emails to Apple Developers explaining the outage of Apple Developer Website.

Apple Developer Website Update

Last Thursday, an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from our developer website. Sensitive personal information was encrypted and cannot be accessed, however, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed. In the spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue. We took the site down immediately on Thursday and have been working around the clock since then.

In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the developer website up again soon.

It is indeed bad news, since there is no way of telling if the intruder managed to access any informations.

Apple is using its own Apple ID service for Developer login, which has been fully operational during this period. It seems that the hacking attempt only happened on Apple Developer Website.

Apple Developer Center is still under maintenance

Apple Developer Center front page is still up while member center has been under maintenance since late Thursday July 19, 2013.

The message says:

We’ll be back soon.

We apologize that maintenance is taking longer than expected.
If your program membership was set to expire during this period, it has been extended and your app will remain on the App Store. If you have any other concerns about your account, please contact us.

Thank you for your patience.

John Gruber thinks that it is bad news since Apple Store was also down.

Obviously his spidey sense is either off or he doesn’t have one at all; John Gruber is not Peter Parker. Apple Store went back online right after Midnight on Sunday July 21, 2013.

During this period, Apple ID site is still working without interruptions.

Apple is expected to release iOS 7 beta 4 and OS X Mavericks Developer Preview 4 on Monday July 22, 2013; based on two week release schedule. Apparently many sites are reporting the obvious as news.

At this point our Apple contacts are either saying nothing or unreachable (out of the country).

Two Opposites of iPhone Rumors in One Day

I for one don’t take rumors seriously. These two rumors were published on the same day.

Rumor One:

Rumor: Apple cutting iPhone production by 20 percent

From MacNN

Rumor Two:

Reported Foxconn hiring spree could signal ‘iPhone 5S’ mass production

From AppleInsider

UPDATE:

Rumor of Foxconn hiring spurs speculation on next iPhone

From MacNN

So why would Foxconn be hiring lots of workers if Apple was reportedly cutting iPhone orders by 20%?

One explanation:

Apple is cutting order for current iPhone and ramping up production for next iPhone.

Rumors are stupid.

Five Years of iTunes App Store

Apple celebrates 5 Years of the App Store, iTunes App Store which launched on July 10, 2008.

I currently have 25 apps installed on a freshly restored iPhone instead of 200+ apps.

The App Store launched about one year after the release of the original iPhone.

Impersonal Setup

I wonder which Genius was the one did the Personal Setup for one particular customer. I saw the paperwork and it specifically said what the customer name and username should be. For some reason this “Genius” assigned “Owner” for the name of the account. To top it off, the customer was not given the password to access her own MacBook Pro.

I reset the “Owner” password using the Recovery System. Then I created an account with the proper name.

Close to the end of the episode, Silicon Red mentions MacBook Air in his song as Bender’s funeral is Funded by Apple, Inc.; official designation is “Apple Inc.” (without the comma).

By the way, Happy 4th of July, especially to the ones in The United States.
