Samsung signs agreement with Microsoft while fiercely fighting Apple in court.

Microsoft announces it has signed agreement with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd.:

Microsoft announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., to cross-license the patent portfolios of both companies, providing broad coverage for each company’s products. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties for Samsung’s mobile phones and tablets running the Android mobile platform. In addition, the companies agreed to cooperate in the development and marketing of Windows Phone.

It is interesting that Samsung signs a cross-licensing deal with Microsoft while fiercely fighting Apple in court over patents and other things.

Well, Samsung already licensed Windows OS for its portable computer in addition to producing Windows Phone 7-based devices.

In related news, Google says that Microsoft-Samsung license deal is “extortion”.

I wonder what Google said about the deals Microsoft made with HTC over Android licensing?

What if Apple asked Samsung to pay royalties for every Android devices sold? Would Samsung take that deal? That’s exactly what Samsung is doing with regard to the deal with Microsoft.

Amazon Kindle Fire, do not call it Android tablet.

Amazon introduces Kindle Fire, a new class of Kindle with color touchscreen.

Don’t call it an Android tablet, though.

Q: How many times does the word “Android” appear on Amazon’s Kindle Fire page?

A: Once, in the following sentence: “Additional email apps are available in our Amazon Appstore for Android.” It’s a Kindle tablet, not an Android tablet.

Amazon Kindle Fire is priced at $199 and will be released on November 15th, 2011.

“Orders are prioritized on a first come, first served basis.”

Amazon Kindle Fire also comes with one month of Amazon Prime, which includes video streaming and free two-day shipping.

How would Amazon Kindle Fire compete with other tablets? The $199 price point is quite attractive. Amazon Prime customers would certainly enjoy the video streaming.

Apple to unveil one new iPhone on October 4th, 2011.

Apple has sent out invitations for October 4th, 2011 “Let’s talk iPhone” event in Apple’s own Cupertino headquarter.

Our sources told us:

  • There will be one new iPhone. Forget about what rumor sites are saying about two new iPhone models.
  • What iPad 3? Wait till 2012.
  • Apple is not making Television unit.
  • Developers will be getting iOS 5 GM on that day.
  • New feature only on the new iPhone.

As usual, there will be numbers of sites covering the event. One thing for sure that Harry McCracken of Technologizer won’t be there due to a previously scheduled engagement.

Repairing a MacBook Pro.

My original MacBook Pro Core Duo I bought back in January 2006 had a crack on the screen bezel.

I found a soon to be discarded MacBook Pro Core Duo with Screen assembly in a really good condition.

30 minutes later I have a seemingly new MacBook Pro.
