WordPress to fight Prenda’s Fishing Expedition Subpoena

WordPress parent company Automattic is going to fight Prenda’s subpoena, Ars Technica reports.

But Automattic’s General Counsel, Paul Sieminski, responded on Friday afternoon with a letter objecting to the subpoena.

Ars Technica also reports that Electronic Frontier Foundation (@EFF) will be representing both DieTrollDie and Fight Copyright Trolls.

EFF is pleased to represent @DieTrollDie and @fightcopytrolls to fight subpoenas in copyright troll Prenda’s defamation lawsuits.

In preparations of this post we have visited both http://dietrolldie.com and http://fightcopyrighttrolls.com. Should Prenda prevailed in getting all the IP adresses of anyone who visited the two sites above since the beginning of 2011, our IP addresses would be in the list too. What good will the IP Addresses do for Prenda Law? This fishing expedition will face a serious storm in the court of law.

Scam Alert: movieplayerupdate.com and videoplayerdownload.co

A Mozilla Firefox user reported popup ads from movieplayerupdate.com (movieplayerupdate.com/mtrack/free_download/1/pre/).
Another Mozilla Firefox user also reported the popup ads from movieplayerupdate.com (movieplayerupdate.com/flashplayer/download_free/).

Both links now show 404 not found, but not before we managed to grab a screenshot. It says:

http:// movieplayerupdate.com

WARNING! Your Flash Player may be out of date. Please update to continue

movieplayerupdate_dot_com

The site is also telling user:

Please Install Flash Player Pro to Continue

Remember folks, there is no such thing as “Flash Player Pro”.

The links on both “REMIND ME LATER” and “INSTALL” point to: mtrack10.com/base2.php

By clicking either button, an executable file will be downloaded.

movieplayerupdate_dot_com-scam

A user sent us a note that similar popups from videoplayerdownload.co were found (videoplayerdownload.co/free-download/mt/1/pre/).

videoplayerdownload_dot_co-scam

The “Install Now” link also points to mtrack10.com/base2.php

videoplayerdownload_dot_co

It seems that both movieplayerupdate.com (whois info) and videoplayerdownload.co (whois info) are registered by the same individual through GoDaddy on the same day (Feb 20, 2013).

The domain mtrack10.com (whois info) is also registered through GoDaddy one week earlier (Feb 14, 2013).

By clicking the “Install Now” button, an executable file will be downloaded.

——-

It is pretty obvious the individuals behind the domain names mentioned above are unscrupulous. Do not blindly download some programs just because a popup told you so.

To update Flash Player, download it direct from Adobe.

Great Shield Matte Screen Protector for Nexus 4

UPDATED 2013-03-09

One little pet peeve of mine about smart phone is the glare on the glass screen. All of the iPhones and Nexus-series phone I own have matte/anti-glare screen protector installed. With the iPhones, I recommend getting Power Support brand. When I got a Nexus 4, I looked into several different brands of screen protectors. I decided to try one out, GreatShield Matte Screen Protector.

It comes in a 3-pack for under $10 at Amazon.com.

It took me about 5 minutes to apply the screen protector with no noticeable dust bubbles, and it took me only one try. I have been applying screen protectors on numerous iPhones, iPad and other smart phones for the past 5 years. I can’t do it with my eyes closed though.

The current revision of GreatShield Matte Screen Protector has the necessary cutout for the front-facing camera and the proximity sensor. During the course of my research, different brands of screen protector for Nexus 4 do not have the said cutout.

One thing that you should know that GreatShield Matte Screen Protector size. While it fully covers the screen area, it is smaller than the glass-face of Nexus 4. It leaves 2 mm on the sides and bottom and 1 mm on the top. The gaps prevent the film from bubbling due to friction from certain Nexus 4 cases. The case I have on this Nexus 4 certainly does not fall in that category.

A few days in, I am pretty satisfied with GreatShield Matte Screen Protector. In case anyone wants to know, it is a Rearth Ringke SLIM Case one the Nexus 4. I’ll post more details about it on a different post.
