iPhone OS 3.0 Beta: NetShare Still Works

NetShare

According to Apple, iPhone OS 3.0 has tethering feature built-in. This feature can be enabled if the service provider would allow it. Certainly iPhone enthusiasts are cheering for it while iPhone detractors are pointing out that other phones are already capable of doing so for a few years now. The truth is that the service providers are the ones to officially allow such features enabled. It all comes down to how much the service providers want to charge their customers for the tethering plan.

In the early days of iTunes App Store (September 2008), Nullriver Software submitted an app called “NetShare” that enabled some kind of tethering between the iPhone and computer through the Wi-Fi. NetShare was eventually published and taken downa t the iTunes App Store, not once but twice. It is widely perceived that AT&T had something to do with the takedown, and NetShare was effectively banned from iTunes App Store.

All is not lost for those who purchased the $10 iPhone Application. The iPhone itself has gone through several OS updates and NetShare is still functional. When Apple revealed that tethering capability was built-in the iPhone OS 3.0, many wonders of NetShare would still be working. The answer is a resounding “YES!”

Does Apple really care if NetShare is still functioning? Probably not, because NetShare’s installed base is relatively low. Only those who followed the iPhone and iTunes App Store stories closely would have the chance to purchase NetShare before it was permanently taken down.

As of March 27th, 2009 NetShare still works in iPhone OS 3.0 Beta.

From “The Are You Serious?” Files: “California to Outlaw Black Cars”

It’s something political this time with some tech and science angle. I first discovered the news through Digg.com and thought that it must be a story from The Onion. Well, it is not!

It is an article from DC Republican Examiner (examiner.com) titled “California to Outlaw Black Cars.

Pretty sure that April 1st is just around the corner, I hope that this is some kind of joke.

From the article:

You see, you thoughtless dark car owners are killing the planet because your car uses too much energy to cool the passengers.

In theory, darker color materials tend to absorb more heat. For a car, does it really make that much difference in terms of energy consumptions to cool the cabin if the color of the car is dark (read black)?

What’s next? We should have all the road painted to less-heat-absorbing-color then. No more asphalts?

Will RIAA Sue Lars Ulrich for Downloading “Death Magnetic” Off Bit Torrent?

In the ultimate sense of irony, Lars Ulrich told Wired that he downloaded the whole “Death Magnetic” using Bit Torrent. Back in April 2000 Ulrich spearheaded Metallica’s suit against Napster for copyright infringement.

Now the question is, will RIAA sue Lars Ulrich for downloading “Death Magnetic” using Bit Torrent? Well, RIAA has been suing people left and right for allegedly downloading music from P2P networks. Bit Torrent is one of those P2P networks.

irony |ˈīrənē; ˈiərnē|
noun ( pl. -nies)
the expression of one’s meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect : “Don’t go overboard with the gratitude,” he rejoined with heavy irony. See note at wit .
• a state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result : [with clause ] the irony is that I thought he could help me.
• (also dramatic or tragic irony) a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character’s words or actions are clear to the audience or reader although unknown to the character.
