iPhone Software 2.0: Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi On

Yet another feature from iPhone Software 2.0 confirmed. The Wi-Fi can be turned on in Airplane mode.

What is the practical use of having Wi-Fi on in Airplane mode? Maybe now the iPhone can be used for browsing the internet on the airplane during flight. But the obvious use is to have the iPhone functioning just like an iPod touch, all the Wi-Fi without the phone signal.

If you recently replaced your original iPhone with iPhone 3G, you can now use it as an iPod touch by switching to the Airplane Mode with Wi-Fi on. It saves some battery life not having the iPhone still looking for the GSM signals.

Metallica: “Death Magnetic” Cover Art is Revealed

Metallica has revealed the cover art for “Death Magnetic,” the new album since 2003.

Higher resolution of the cover art can be found at Metallica’s own website.

As pictured above, the cover art depicts magnetic field surrounding a coffin-shaped grave. “Death Magnetic” cover art also marks the return of Metallica’s famous logo with slight alterations that was abandoned since “Load” in 1996, with the exception of “Garage Inc.” which was a facsimile of “Garage Days Re-Revisited” band logo.

As a side notes, some Blabbermouth readers posted funny comments about the cover art.

As previously confirmed, a special edition of “Death Magnetic” will be packaged in a coffin box. The Special Edition Box will include the full CD , a demo CD, “making of the album” DVD, a t-shirt only available in this box, a flag, guitar picks, and a fold out poster along with a collector’s credit card embossed with a code to redeem a free download of a special European show happening in September (details coming soon!). Special Edition contents are subject to change/finalize.

Google Mail Mysteriously Fails

UPDATE 2008.07.16 17:30 Pacific Time
Email services has been restored to the particular accounts.

I was first notified in the morning about the problems with Goggle Mail. Apparently some Google Apps accounts are unable to access their email. The accounts can still access all Google Apps with the exception for email.

In addition to that, the accounts are unable to access mail through Gmail POP and IMAP. The particular accounts cannot access Gmail SMTP server either. Meanwhile other accounts can access Gmail without any problems.

As usual, it is almost impossible to contact Google. All I can find is some web-forms to contact Google Technical Support team.

July 16th, 1969.

Commander Neil Alden Armstrong, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Edwin Eugene ‘Buzz’ Aldrin, Jr. braved a new frontier and head to the moon. Both Armstrong and Aldrin had the privilege to land on the moon while Collins manned the module orbiting above.

It took four days for Apollo 11 to reach the moon.

to be continued on July 20th, 2008.

Installing WordPress 2.6

WordPress 2.6 has just been released, and I hastily upgraded the self-hosted blog from version 2.5.1 to version 2.6 after I backed up the database first.

The upgrade process took about 10 minutes to complete, including the uploading new WordPress 2.6 files to the server. It could’ve been faster, but for some reason the web-host incoming FTP is pretty slow.

Before upgrading, I turned of any caching plugins.

Overall, the upgrade process is painless. Don’t forget to clear your browser cache after upgrading to WordPress 2.6.
