Announcing Windows 10

From Microsoft:

In the Windows team, we’re proud of this – but we also know that the world today is very different from the one in which Windows grew up. Today, devices outnumber people. Connectivity is like oxygen. The tension between the desire for agility versus stability poses a huge challenge for IT Pros. Experiences – no matter what device you’re on – just need to work. The only thing that hasn’t really changed is the situation for developers – still too much to do, and not enough time.

One way to look at it is that Windows is at a threshold :-). It’s time for a new Windows. This new Windows must be built from the ground-up for a mobile-first, cloud-first world. This new Windows must help our customers be productive in both their digital work and their digital life. This new Windows must empower people and organizations to do great things.

Windows 8 is so two years ago. Here comes Windows 9.

That new Windows is Windows 10.

What?

Microsoft, you just skipped Windows 9.

OK, Windows branding and numbering system never made sense anyway. From Windows XP to Windows Vista to Windows 7. Then it went to 8. Why not call it Windows X, as in Roman numeral for 10? Maybe not, because it looks like that other Operating System with X in it, or that desktop shell called X Window System.

Tomorrow, we are excited to announce the Windows Insider Program, where PC experts and IT Pros can get access to a technical preview of Windows 10 for desktops and laptops. Soon after, we’ll also be releasing technical previews of Windows Server and our management tools.

OK, I’ll certainly be there tomorrow.

By the way, Windows 10 will finally get Multiple Desktop just like Linux and OS X.

The Trouble with Windows 8

It seems a lot of people having issues with Windows 8.x. Somehow it is impossible to refresh/reinstall Windows 8 because the drive was “locked”.

Windows 8.1 drive is locked

There are a lot of suggestion on what to do in solving this issue, but none of them seems to be the solution.

The Trouble with Office 365 Activation

I have been getting a lot of phone calls that Office 365 is having trouble with activation. According to users, their copy of Office 365 was previously activated.

Office 365 Failed to Activate

This is especially annoying because they actually paid for the subscriptions.

Windows 8.1 Update

The naming system is a bit strange, if you think about it.

Windows 8.1 Update is now available.

Windows 8.1 Update

I have just updated two computers running Windows 8.1 and I have not had the chance to see the important changes on this Update.

Microsoft Office for iPad

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announces that Office for iPad, consisting of Word, Excel and PowerPoint, is finally released. The Apps can view Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents for free. Each App weighs in at over 200 MB.

“To create and edit, an Office 365 subscription is needed.”

The Microsoft Office Apps offer In-App Purchase of Office 365 Home Annual Subscription for $99. Assuming the 70-30 split is still in place, Apple is getting $29.70 for each subscription made through the App.

Office 365 Home Subscription includes:

  • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and more
  • Install on 5 PCs and Macs
  • Use on mobile devices (iOS, Android, Windows Phone)
  • 20GB of additional OneDrive Storage
  • Skype world minutes when available

Microsoft should have released Office for iPad sooner. Quickoffice and iWork Apps (Keynote, Numbers and Pages) are fully capable of replacing Microsoft Office.
