The Road Left Behind: May 2009

May 2009 has been a busy month and I’ve been posting less on this blog. I figured that I should post the stuff I’ve been meaning to post here.

……. to be continued.

Early preview version of iTunes 8.2 was required to install iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 and Beta 5. Since then, no new iPhone OS 3.0 Beta has been released. It is estimated that iPhones OS 3.0 Beta 5 would expire sometimes late June 2009. That means a new build of iPhone OS 3.0 should be release in the near future. Possibly to coincide with WWDC 2009. The shipping version of iPhone OS 3.0 is expected to be released in mid-July along with the new iPhone hardware(s).

iPhone App: The Expensive SlingPlayer Mobile

Apparently the people at Sling Media doesn’t want to sell much of the highly anticipated SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone. Confidently and uniformly priced at $29.99, SlingPlayer Mobile is available for BlackBerry, Palm, Symbian and Windows Mobile in addition to the iPhone.

With such price point, Sling Media will have a tougher time to sell the app. SlingPlayer Mobile for the iPhone supports streaming only on Wi-Fi, while it supports streaming on 3G connections on other platforms.

iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 3 Expires on May 9th, 2009.

UPDATE:
iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 is expiring around June 19th, 2009. Get iPhone OS 3.0 Official Release through iTunes.

As we have reported before, iPhone OS 3.0 Beta carries an expiration date. For those who has iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 3 still on their phone might have some purple shock today. As the software hits the expiration date, the iPhone displays purple screen with instructions to connect to iTunes. When connected, iTunes warned that the software has expired and must be updated to the newer version. In this state, the iPhone is rendered useless except for emergency calls. The most current version is iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 as of May 9th, 2009. Based on the expiration date of previous builds, iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 will expire on June 1st, 2009.

iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 and iTunes 8.2 Pre-release (b10)

May 6th, 2009. Wednesday evening, Apple released iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 5 (Build: 7A312g) along with the SDK and new build of iTunes 8.2. This marks the first time Apple breaks the release cycles between iPhone OS 3.0  Beta revisions. Up to Beta 4, the release was in two-week-interval.

In the meantime, Mac OS X 10.5.7 is rumored to see release as early as Friday May 8th, 2009. As we had found out before, note-syncing in iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 required Mac OS X 10.5.7.

iTunes 8.2 Pre-release (b10) is available for Mac OS X (Tiger and Leopard) and Windows XP/Vista (32-bit and 64-bit).

iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 and iTunes 8.2

Some notes regarding iPhone OS 3.0 and iTunes 8.2:

  • Syncing notes requires Mac OS X 10.5.7 or later.
  • “Store” Settings is now working.
  • iPhone performance is much improved compared to Beta 3.

This begs the question: Is Mac OS X 10.5.7 about to be released?

More will be added as they surfaced.
