Apple, iPhone and the Detroit model.

Yesterday, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing Phil Schiller introduced iPhone 4S; the successor to to 2010’s iPhone 4. The reaction was mixed but the negative ones are louder. To paraphrased:

  • iPhone 4S? Where’s iPhone 5 as rumored?
  • It looks like an iPhone 4. Apple is running out of ideas.
  • iPhone 4S is a total dud, because it doesn’t have LTE.
  • No teardrop design? iPhone 4S design is so outdated.

Let’s take a look at what’s good about iPhone 4S:

  • A5 dual-core processor. Dramatically improved performance.
  • World phone; isn’t that what many have been asking for?
  • Much improved camera. Forget the Megapixel counts, it has better image sensor.
  • Siri is a welcomed addition to the iPhone.

For the past few years, some pundits were criticizing Apple for adopting the “Detroit model”. To paraphrase:

Here’s a new iPod/iPhone/iPad. It looks different, so you must buy new one. Just like the Detroit industries adding “wings” to the cars.

So, when Apple sticks to a great iPhone 4 design:

What’s this iPhone 4S? It looks like an iPhone 4. We want to see new design.

It is imperative to stop taking the pundits seriously. We should have done so years ago.

Let’s talk iPhone.: iPhone 4S
