Use the iPod shuffle Reset Utility to fix the following issues:
- With the iPod shuffle switched on, pressing the Play button will cause amber and green LEDs to flash for a few seconds, and the unit will not play any music, nor can you sync music to it from iTunes.
- On a Windows PC, iPod shuffle will appear in My Computer as a “Removable Disk,” however the iPod shuffle volume will not mount correctly. The unit is listed in Device Manager under “Disk Drives” as “Apple iPod USB Device.”
- On a Mac, the unit will only be recognized in Apple System Profiler under Hardware -> USB and will not appear or mount in the Finder.
- When attempting to restore, the unit may not be recognized at all. However, if it is recognized, the restore may fail with an error dialog “Firmware update failure. Disk write error” or another error. It may take 3 restore attempts before the error appears. Note: iPod shuffle may take several minutes to be recognized.

10.23.2006 Apple iPod Turns Five Years Old
October 23, 2001
Apple CEO, Steve Jobs introduced the first Apple iPod with the tagline: “1,000 songs in your pocket”. It was a 5GB hard disk based portable digital music player (MP3 player). Apple iPod was not the first hard disk based MP3 player, but it was the first to be in a compact form. It was first using 1.8″ hard drive as opposed to 2.5″ and 3.5″ hard drives. Unlike any other models, the iPod utilizes FireWire connectivity for fast data transfer. It is also tighly integrated into Apple iTunes, the experience only Mac users could have at that time.
Shortly after the release of iPod, other manufacturers started releasing compact hard drive based MP3 players. None of thm could compete with the function and the style of iPod. There were two things that made iPod stood out:
* The iConic white color on its faceplate and the earbuds
* The ScrollWheel
The original 5GB iPod (the iPod classic) was priced at $399, a seemingly shocking sticker price. Apple only sold 125,000 units of iPod within the first two months of its introduction. Apple then released a 10GB model which was retailed for $499 a few months after.

10.17.2006 Apple Warns off Small Number of Video iPods Shipped with Windows Virus
From Apple:
We recently discovered that a small number - less than 1% - of the Video iPods available for purchase after September 12, 2006, left our contract manufacturer carrying the Windows RavMonE.exe virus. This known virus affects only Windows computers, and up to date anti-virus software which is included with most Windows computers should detect and remove it. So far we have seen less than 25 reports concerning this problem. The iPod nano, iPod shuffle and Mac OS X are not affected, and all Video iPods now shipping are virus free. As you might imagine, we are upset at Windows for not being more hardy against such viruses, and even more upset with ourselves for not catching it.

10.16.2006 One Week to iPod Five Year Birthday
October 23rd, 2001 Apple introduced a little device that plays MP3 called iPod. It was first released exclusively for Mac OS. No it was not the first hard drive based music player. It was the smallest of its kind at the time of the release. It soon became a hit among Mac users.
I preordered iPod the day it was announced. I was crazy enough to spend my money on a device that could only be used with a Mac, considering that I didn't even own a Mac at that time.
Here we are, almost 5 years to the day. So many different incarnations of the iPod brands, and the transistions of Macintosh platform from PowerPC to Intel.
I currently still own my iPod classic (as I would call it), an iPod mini, and an iPod shuffle. I also bought iPod photo which now belongs to a dear friend of mine. I have been pondering about buying newer iPods, but so far I have managed not to get one. I almost bought the seond generation iPod nano the day it was announced, but (un)luckily the Apple Store at Fashion Show in Las Vegas did not have it.
I will be posting more on my iPod classic throughout the week. Yes it is still working and I still got 4 to 6 hours of use out of it in one single charge.
